Tips For Getting Started - Domain Name & Web...

Published on: 09/01/2012

At RawOnline, we understand that for many Small Business Owners, getting started online can be a daunting experience, especially if you are inexperienced with the internet and unfamiliar with all the lingo going around.

Here is a quick rundown of the procedure and stepping stones towards having a successful Online Business:

1) Purchase a Domain Name

Purchasing a Domain Name is always the first thing that you want to do, and it's really easy!  Here are a few tips for effectively setting up a Domain Name:

 - Choose a Domain Name that is simple and easy for people to remember.  (i.e. If your name is 'TJDB Widget Manufacturing and Supplies', perhaps just 'TJDB.com.au' or 'WidgetManufacturing.com.au' is easier than the full name.)

 - Choose an extension that suits your business location (i.e. .COM.AU is appropriate for Australian Businesses)

 - Register it with a trustworrhy Registrar or Reseller who will be easy to contact and deal with.

 - Don't pay too much.  Some registrars will try to charge from $150 - $10,000 for simple Domain Names.  Others will only charge $50 - $100 for the same service.

2) Purchase Web Hosting

Web Hosting can be a really simple product, however, ensuring that your Web Hosting is done correctly can save you a huge amount of trouble, heart-ache and money.  While some companies may charge rediculous amounts for basic Web Hosting, it really is important that you're with a reliable provider.

Things to look for in a Web Hosting Provider:

 - The same Geographical Location as your website and customers.

 - Preferrably the registrar of your Domain Name (to save dealing with too many providers)

 - On-call Support and Advanced Ticketing/Support System.

 - Access to a hosted FTP software (such as cPanel).

Once you have signed up for your Web Hosting account, the first thing you want to do is to create an email address using your Domain Name Extension (i.e. yourname@yourdomain.com.au).

The second thing that you want to do is setup a website, possibly a RawOnline - Free Single Page Website to begin with.
